Welcome!

Welcome to my little corner of the web. Do you have the right Steve Toy? Well let me tell you a little more and see if it matches the person you meant to find. Professionally, I am currently at Ernst & Young (EY) focused on Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain technologies. EY!?! you say? Yup...EY, which has actually been pretty cool but surprises many as historically I’ve been part of leadership teams that brought six digital product and service businesses to untapped revenue and enterprise growth in more entrepreneurial settings.

However, when you think about it, I've built my career leading customers and teams to optimize the power of technology innovation as early as possible. That is what EY is looking to do these days in order to both tap into new areas of growth and, quite frankly, to stave off the serious existential threat that AI poses to tax preparers and accountants across the globe.

How'd I wind up here? Well, in early 2016 I took the role of CEO at, TaxChat, a start-up whose main product made an 'Uber-like' pairing between tax filers and tax preparers. Essentially a two-sided marketplace facilitated by technology. After successfully launching and navigating the 2016 tax season we turned our attention to partnerships that could fill the funnel for the 2017 season. Those discussions resulted in EY buying TaxChat, which you can read more about here.

Prior to TaxChat I served as SVP/GM of ancillary revenue at CheapOair.com (owned by Fareportal). I raised media earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) 50 percent year-over-year and ancillary revenue per ticket by 47 percent. From 2011 to 2013, I brought Billboard’s revenue into the digital age bringing the share of revenue from digital sources from 10 percent to 50 percent through product and social innovations. Between 2007 and 2011, I built a Digital Media agency, Beema, that helped hundreds of companies enter the digital age for the first time and developed a cutting-edge, investor-backed social app.

I was also part of the early teams of two pioneering technology companies. One, Software Secure, was an early mover in digital security for online test taking, where I grew revenue 5X in three years and oversaw the development and profitability of the top-revenue generating product. The other was ICTV, now Active Video, that has one of the first defensible patents for interactive TV. I negotiated the inter-departmental give and take in the development of that product, built the Finance, HR, Business Development and Operations functions there, and helped raise $30M+ in funding.

On the personal side, I got my degree from Swarthmore College, after which my first job was as a lobbyist in Australia. I've lived in Australia, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco and currently live in NYC the city where I grew up. I spend much of my free time running triathlons, skiing (weather allowing) furthering the cause of adult literacy and every once in a while dabbling in comedy.
